Features at a Glance

What Was…? is a recurring column that explores residual and/or forgotten concepts, objects, or events. A “What Was…” feature must make a claim about why its subject has fallen out of view and articulate the stakes of either leaving it behind or reviving it

Allow Me to Introduce is a space for writers to elevate the work of artists or scholars and introduce them to an unfamiliar readership or alert readers to their recent output. This feature segment can take the form of either an essay about the artist/work or an interview with the artist/writer.

Hold Up is an opportunity to re-encounter a “classic” or “canonical” work—novel, academic monograph, film, album, art exhibit, performance—and ask, does it still hold up? A “Hold Up” feature must historicize its object: why or how is this object able to speak to a cultural or political context that it did not anticipate?

On the Scene is a practice-focused tiny reportage on a cultural or artistic event that is happening now or is coming up soon. An “On the Scene” feature should advocate for why a reader should direct their attention towards an ongoing event.
