Adaptation Anxiety
Adaptation is everywhere! In the spring of 2026, MTC is running a new series called Adaptation Anxiety, where new and returning writers consider literary adaptations from the last few years. We ask not whether these adaptations are good or bad, faithful or unfaithful to the source, but bigger questions about the logic underlying contemporary works of adaptation and why audiences have such big feelings about seeing precious characters on screen. Why, in other words, are we so anxious about the move from book to screen, and what does all this angst about the adaptation as a form tell us about our present relationships to these mediums?
MTC Mixtapes asks our editors, writers, and readers to share their responses to a particular question about something they’re loving, hating, fascinated by, or curious about right now.
Four Your Consideration is our column where MTC editors, writers, and readers point your attention to works of art and cultural texts that may have dropped out of the 36-hour discourse cycle, but we consider worthy of your attention and consideration.
In the month of February, MTC is featuring writing on this awards season’s contenders. We asked writers, scholars, and cinephiles for their takes on award hopefuls. By placing multiple short reviews in conversation, we hope to open up critical conversation on these films, as each writer highlights what they think is interesting (or excellent, or horrible) about the film.
After each MTC reading group, we ask our participants to contribute to our collective reading journal, an informal and necessarily incomplete record of our thinking together.
